Compact Kitchen Design

Not every home needs — or benefits from — a large open-plan kitchen. With thoughtful design, compact kitchens can be just as beautiful, functional, and highly efficient.

Smart design for smaller kitchens

In smaller spaces, clever planning is everything. Simple design moves can completely change how spacious a kitchen feels. For example, combining full-height cabinetry on one wall with open shelving opposite helps maintain visual openness while maximising storage.

Light, neutral colour palettes, gloss finishes, and reflective surfaces can further enhance natural light and create a sense of airiness.

Making every inch work harder

Well-designed kitchens make use of every available centimetre. Full-height units with intelligent internal storage systems can transform usability, while pull-out spice racks, bottle storage, and tiered organisers keep essentials neatly accessible without cluttering worktops.

We also design bespoke solutions for more challenging spaces — from awkward corners to tight alcoves — ensuring no area is wasted.

Flexible, tailored layouts

Where space allows, we can incorporate compact kitchen islands or peninsula breakfast bars, tailored precisely to the proportions of the room. Foldaway workspaces and hidden cabinetry are also great ways to add flexibility without compromising flow.

At the heart of every layout is the classic kitchen principle: the working triangle — sink, hob, and fridge. Keeping these three key areas well-positioned and easy to move between is essential for a smooth, efficient workflow.

A recent transformation

In a recent project, we worked with a previously restricted galley kitchen and completely reimagined the space. By relocating the eye-level ovens to the very rear of the kitchen, we immediately improved the sense of openness upon entry.

We also boxed in the boiler with seamless cabinetry for a cleaner, more streamlined look. One of the most impactful changes was repositioning the back door to the far end of the room and introducing glazing, creating a clear sightline to the garden from the moment you walk in.

To complete the design, we added a curved seating area overlooking the garden — a perfect spot for a morning coffee made from a discreet, built-in coffee station.

Key design features

The cabinetry was finished in a smooth, minimalist style to achieve a calm, contemporary feel. Subtle reeded detailing was introduced in selected areas to add texture and visual interest without disrupting the clean aesthetic. A hidden pull-out coffee station, concealed behind a tambour door, keeps everyday appliances neatly out of sight.

Our approach

We specialise in thinking beyond the obvious. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from small structural changes — such as repositioning doors or windows to unlock better flow and natural light. We can also recommend and coordinate trusted trades to help bring every detail of your design to life.
